When you work in the marketing industry (or any industry for that matter), it is not just about what you know but also about who you know. As a residential rental agent, you have to keep expanding your network because it increases your chances of closing deals.
Knowledge in the field is very vital. However, building strong business relationships with the right people can help you get ahead on your road to success. Knowledge coupled with a strong network gives you a better chance of becoming a successful rental agent.
Here are a few ways you can do that:
Join Real Estate Groups in your Locale
Rental real estate is a big industry, so it is not rare for players in the industry to form organized groups because of their common interests: finding clients, closing deals, scouting for properties, etc.
A quick Google search can lead you to different groups that focus on various niches. You can also start your own with your friends who are also rental agents. After all, that is how most organized groups start.
Work on your LinkedIn Profile
In this age of social media, networking happens or starts mostly online. Your online presence must establish a good first impression on whoever stumbles upon it. In the business world, your LinkedIn profile is probably the first place a person would check if he wants to get a glimpse of your professional background.
Optimize your LinkedIn profile and make sure that it will impress anyone who sees it. Here are a few ways you can do that:
• Get a professionally photographed headshot. A cropped photo from your college reunion does not scream excellent and credible. Dress sharp and get your picture taken by a real photographer. Smile directly into the camera or slightly facing sideways. You will look professional, approachable, and trustworthy.
• Customize your banner. Do you see how big brands want billboards that stand out amongst others? Think of your LinkedIn banner as your personal billboard. Do not use the default LinkedIn banners. Have one customized by a graphic designer. Maybe put a photo of yourself in a powerful stance, add a catchy slogan, notable accomplishments, and client testimonials.
• Write a unique headline. Do not go for generic headlines like “Residential Rental Agent in NYC” and expect it to convert into leads. Your headline must give people a glimpse of your expertise. A good example would be “Finding the best homes for renters since 2001.” It establishes what you do, and your longevity in the business shows your credibility.
You should also make an impressive “About” page, but most of the time, people only go for a quick glimpse on people’s LinkedIn pages. So the only part they will often look at is your photo, banner, and headline. Make sure it leaves a good impression.
Build credibility
Other than marketing properties, another way you can expand your network is by sharing your knowledge. Write and self-publish ebooks, start a vlog/podcast, and accept offers to talk in speaking engagements.
Aside from being able to connect to a bigger audience, being an “author” or “influential speaker” on top of being a residential rental agent can give you more credibility.
Share what you do
Sometimes, the best connections happen in a casual environment. Engage in small talk with people in informal social gatherings and casually mention what you do. The good thing about being in real estate is that almost anyone can be a client because homes are one of humanity’s basic needs. Whether it’s someone you met at church or in a random café, they can relate to what you do at some level and might someday be able to refer someone you can do business with.
Do not burn bridges
When you publish a listing on Padleads and syndicate it to popular rental websites, several interested renters will reach out to you. However, not all of them will be qualified to rent. They have to go through and pass your screening process. Some of them will fall short. However, that does not mean you will never engage in business with them again.
You might find a property in the future that they can qualify to rent. Or you can refer them to other listings you have on Padleads that will match them perfectly.
