A landlord’s responsibility involves taking care of his property and tenants. His interests are not solely focused on his business but should also focus on his customers. If the renters feel they live in a safe environment, their level of satisfaction will increase. Unfortunately, some people cause trouble, and the tenants worry for their safety. One example is when someone tries to break in.
In Canada, there were 137,516 burglaries in the year 2020. The rental’s location may not always matter. There is always a possibility of it happening. Landlords should not take them lightly because there could be damages to the property. Incidences like these may also scare the tenants away, and we don’t want that. The best thing for property owners is to maintain a safe home for their renters. But how exactly do they do that?
• Security cameras
Since the landlords are willing to invest in their business, they might as well go all out. Spending money on security gadgets is a must for all. In my opinion, it is a necessary purchase to ensure the property is safe.
The University of North Carolina conducted a study among 400 burglars, and they asked them what would make them hesitate to break into a house. At least 60% of the participants answered that having security cameras discourage them. The cameras will capture attempted break-ins and may reveal the burglars’ faces.
The landlords may put the cameras in strategic areas such as the front and back entrance, stairwells, and hallways. They should also inform the tenants of the security cameras’ locations and when they can access the footage. If you can, remind the landlords that installing cameras inside the rental is not allowed.
• Heavy-duty doors
Most burglars choose to access the front door when they break in. Because of this, landlords should consider having heavy-duty doors made from steel or wood in their rental properties. It will make it harder for home invaders to get through and may intimidate them into going through their plans.
Glass doors are easier to break, and you should discourage landlords from using them. I know glass can help natural light brighten the property, but we should prioritize safety over design. Aside from the standard locks, property owners can add deadbolt ones for added measure.
• Window access
If burglars cannot use the doors, they might find other entry points. Some invaders use windows to enter the property. Landlords should also find ways to secure them using working locks. Even if the windows are on the upper levels, they should have locks or security bars. For added security, property owners can also buy alarms that will emit a shrill sound once someone opens a door or window.
* Doorbell cameras
Burglars will avoid anything that can identify them. The best way to get their identification is through capturing their face on camera. Aside from the security cameras around the property, landlords should consider investing in doorbell cameras. If you think about it, these gadgets can get a closer look at the home invaders.
Doorbell cameras will also make it easier to scare off the suspects because even if the occupants are not at home, they can check the cameras through their phones. The cameras are attached to an intercom, and they can let the burglars know someone is watching them. It is a sure-fire way to make them abort the break-in.
Tenants will always choose safe areas and properties. It is one of the things they look for in a home, and landlords should provide that. Ensuring the tenants’ protection, as well as the property’s, should be a top priority for all property owners. Not just in Canada, but all over the world.
You can also use the security measures I mentioned in your ads to attract more tenants. Speaking of which, you need to check out Padleads. They will let you post your property listings and syndicate them to other websites online. Your listings will be in the tenants’ top choices for sure.
